Charles was with Ralph DePalma in the 1911 race. And there is some controversy about the 1912 race.

Click on the 1911 race and then the starting line up. You will see car #2 with DePalma and Pop about to get in.

Click on the 1912 race and you can look at the pictures of DePalma and his mechanic pushing #4 across the finish line.

I emailed Dick and asked him about the stories of who the mechanic was in those famous 1912 photos and he told me to keep looking because there were five pit stops in that race and it is possible Pops was in the car at the end. Some very interesting stories by an insider about auto racing. With a good insight into the personalities and characteristics of these men.

Lots of smoke due to loose bearing tolerances in the old days. Somewhere in the noise and confusion our grandfather is choking down the fumes and getting ready to ride into history at the first ever Indy 500 race.

Nothing at all to do with Pops except the photos of race cars of the time and he was in 1912 race. If you like old race cars this is interesting.
